What is Therapeutic Massage?

Therapeutic massage is a manual therapy that involves manipulating the muscles and other soft tissue structures in the body. Massage may be used to treat:

  • Anxiety
  • Digestive disorders
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic tension
  • Insomnia related to stress
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries; tennis or golfers elbow
  • Limited range of motion
  • Temporalmandiular joint pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Recovery from medical procedures

There are a variety of modalities and techniques that fall under the practice of therapeutic massage. Some are well known and employed in conjunction with conventional Western medicine: Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Sports Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, and Myofascial Release. Massage sessions are customized to the needs of each client, whether it be simply relaxation, or relief from a physical or stress-related ailment. My particular approach to therapeutic massage blends these modalities and also applies a 5,000 year old system of healing called Ayurveda.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda’s emphasis is to find balance in body, mind and spirit. According to Ayurveda, there are three constitution types, known as Doshas, which are integrated and expressed through every element of our body and mind:

  1. Vata- Air and Ether
  2. Pitta- Fire
  3. Kapha- Earth and Water

Ayurveda addresses imbalances in the doshas through diet, cleansing and self-care techniques. When there is an imbalance of one or more of these qualities, we experience discomfort. For example, if Vata is out of balance one may experience creaky joints, a restless mind, and insomnia. With an overabundance of Pitta, the fire element, there may be inflammation in the joints or muscle tissues, tired burning eyes, and skin sensitivities. With extra Kapha, one may feel heaviness and density in the body and limbs, water retention, and limited range of motion. We are all prone to any and all of these conditions. When a client comes to me I look at how the doshas may be expressing themselves and give a treatment accordingly. Through the help of the ancient science of Ayurveda I feel I can best help my clients find balance, peace, and comfort within their body.
